The history of corn in Iran
Some believe that Portugal is the country that brought corn to Iran for the first time. they traded with the southern coasts and occupied the southern regions for a while.
But other people believe that the history of corn in Iran goes back to the time of Shah Ismail Safavid. Shah Ismail has encouraged merchants to import this seed and then farmers to plant it.
There is another hypothesis about the history of corn in Iran. The reason is that the pilgrims brought corn to Iran from their trip to Mecca. Because once in Iran, corn was called Mecca wheat. Even now, this name is common in the Azerbaijan region. Therefore, it can be assumed that corn entered Iran from Saudi Arabia.
Currently, the corn is considered an important agricultural product. The provinces of Mazandaran, Golestan, Kermanshah, Khuzestan, Khorasan and Gilan are the poles of corn production in Iran. Iranian corn is of high quality and its taste is pleasant.

Classification of corn types based on uses
All kinds of corn are used as human food, fodder for livestock, seeds for poultry, fermentation industries and production of industrial products such as ethanol. In the following, we intend to introduce the types of corn and its cultivation methods.
According to this, corn is divided into three general categories
fodder corn
dual-purpose corn
sweet corn
Fodder corn is grown and harvested only for the use of livestock and poultry. which are edible if picked early and on time, but are often used for fodder or grain.
Sweet and very sweet corns are mutant corns with increased sugar content in their endosperm. These cultivars are also called sugar corns. The ratio of sugar to starch in the endosperm of sweet and super sweet corn, called amyl dextrin, is higher than in other types of corn. The time to harvest these products is when the seeds are close to 70 per cent moisture.
Sweet and super sweet corn has sweet, glassy starchy seeds called cobs
Types of corn based on the length of the growing season
Corn is divided into three groups based on the length of the growth period
- Early varieties: ripening period 70-75 days.
- Intermediate grades: processing period of 80-90 days.
- Late figures: processing period of 90-100 days.
- Dual-purpose and fodder corns:
- Fodder harvest: 80-100 days.
- Grain harvest: 110-145 days.

Iranian corn is planted in two ways: direct and seeding. The suitable temperature for planting is between 19-34 degrees Celsius and the planting depth is between 2.5-5 cm. It is important to use suitable fertilizers and adequate nutrition.
The best temperature for corn growth
- Germination: 8-10 degrees Celsius.
- Growth: 25-30 degrees Celsius.
- Temperatures 39-40 degrees Celsius cause problems such as leaf burn and reduced product quality.
Amount of corn per hectare
- Sweet corn: 50-75 thousand 7-11 kg per hectare.
- Dual-purpose corn: 75-100 thousand seeds or 50-100 kg per hectare.
Corn export from Iran
Corn is packed in bulk in 20-foot containers weighing 20 tons or more and exported to different countries.
These containers are sent to their destination by ship, plane or trailer. The countries that use this export are due to the feeding of livestock and poultry, the food industry and the production of processed products.
Exporting corn to these countries is not only the main source of meeting their food needs but also strengthens the economy of these countries. Therefore, the increase in corn exports in recent years has had a direct impact on the world market, on the other hand, it brings significant economic benefits to corn-producing countries.
